About DAVID

David is a freelance director based in Birmingham, AL, his hometown. He is “flying solo” after assisting at many of the finest regional theatres in the country.

Most recently, he directed Sunday in the Park with George, the inaugural production at the “new” Terrific New Theatre. David considers TNT his “artistic home,” where his other productions include Fun Home, The Big Meal, Circle Mirror Transformation, and “The Nora Plays,” a pairing of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House (adapted by Thornton Wilder) and Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2.

Other credits include A Year with Frog and Toad at Birmingham Children’s Theatre; Middletown at Theatre Downtown; Well at Birmingham Festival Theatre; The Underpants and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change at Homewood Theatre; and a tour of Ruth and the Green Book for Red Mountain Theatre Company.

He is the recipient of the 2024-2025 Theatre Fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

He has assistant directed at the Alliance Theatre, Goodspeed Musicals, Arkansas Repertory Theatre, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company. He was awarded a 2017 SDCF Observership to work with Marcia Milgrom Dodge on Gypsy at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

David graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a B.A. in English. He is an Associate Member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.
